Millie the Moonicorn

THE LAST TRUCK

“What’s that?” Millie asked Francis (fox).
“The Mailman,” Francis said.
“What does he do?”
“He delivers the mail,” Francis explained.
“Oh,” said Millie.

-----

“What’s that?” Millie asked Digby (dog).
“The Veterinarian,” Digby said.
“What does she do?”
“She takes care of all the animals and gives them medicine,” Digby explained.
“Oh,” said Millie.

-----

“Who’s that?” Millie asked Cordelia (cow).
“The Milkman,” Cordelia said.
“What does he do?”
“He picks up milk, puts it into bottles, and delivers it to people,” Clara explained.
“Oh,” Millie said.

-----

“What’s that?” Millie asked Cordelia after she came back from being milked.

(illo: The milk truck drives off as a Hay Truck arrives
Cordelia, now half of her previous size, stands next to Millie)

“Hay truck,” Cordelia said.
“What is it for?”
“They pick up and drop off bales of hay to different farms,” Clara explained.
“Oh, Millie said.”

-----

“Who’s that?” Millie asked Pig.
“That’s the butcher,” Pig said.
“What does he do?”

(illo: Pig whispering into Millie’s ear)

“Oh!” Millie shouted.

-----

A short while later the butcher found that all of his tires had odd, horn-sized holes in them.
And the farm animals were nowhere to be found.

(illo: Millie and her friends are hiding, their heads sticking out among the bushes and barn windows, watching the frustrated Butcher)

THE END

(illo: Mille back on the farm with all of her friends behind her as she glares at the butcher, threatening him with her horn
His hands are raised, giving up.  Francis (fox) has painted a line through the work “Butcher” on the truck
and written the word “Vegetarian” above it)
